Beltrán Leyva Organization Splits from Sinaloa Cartel
In January 2008, the arrest of Alfredo Beltrán Leyva triggered a violent rupture within the Sinaloa Cartel. The Beltrán Leyva brothers accused El Chapo Guzmán of betraying Alfredo’s location to the government. The BLO allied with Los Zetas against the Sinaloa Cartel, launching a bloody inter-cartel war.
The split followed the recurring pattern: internal betrayal leads to fragmentation, which leads to escalated violence. The BLO itself was rapidly dismantled (Marcos Arturo killed December 2009, Carlos arrested same month, Héctor arrested 2014), fragmenting further into groups including the Guerreros Unidos — later linked to the Ayotzinapa disappearances.
