Mexican Drug Trade
The history of drug trafficking in Mexico, from early 20th-century opium cultivation in the Sierra Madre through the formation of modern cartel structures. The trade evolved from a rural, loosely organized activity into a centralized, corporatized enterprise, shaped at every stage by US counter-narcotics policy and Mexican state complicity.
